Rendezvous Questionnaire on Social Emotional Learning | Rendezvous, March’15

Dear Ma’am,

Greetings of the day!

  1. How would you define Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
The Social & Emotional Quotient of a child is of utmost importance for the IQ to be in place. So SEL is a learning which works on the holistic development of the child tapping all skills, be it academic or non-academic.
  • What should be included in an SEL centered curriculum?

SEL Curriculum works best if it involves the freedom of mind which shall then help in inter personal skills, problem solving, readiness, leadership, self-esteem, critical & cognitive thinking and last but not the least empathy.
  1. Why is it important to have an SEL curriculum as a part of basic education?
It gives a strong foundation to students and supports their success, not only academically but also personally which helps them to be better learners and contribute to a positive growing environment.
  • How can Social-Emotional Learning and Positive Behavior Interventions & Support be combined in schools to produce a holistic educational system?
This can be done with meticulous planning and focus on explicit teaching learning activities which includes having a child centered approach enabling the learner to think & act beyond the classroom in the day-to-day life.
  • What do you think is the appropriate grade to begin teaching SEL in schools?
As maximum brain development takes place between 2 to 7 years, pre-primary stage would be the appropriate grade to start working on the social emotional skills of a child.
  • What adaptations would schools need to adopt it as a part of the curriculum?
A supportive & flexible staff, an encouraging environment, freedom of expression & discussion and a positive stimulation to overcome all barriers in and out of the comfort zone.
